About Our RSS and XML Newsfeeds

At this moment in time you probably have no idea what an RSS feed is - worry not!

All you need to know is that it's the very latest way for you to enjoy the news you want without all the problems associated with e-mail and browsing through the internet. The best part is that the news you subscribe to is delivered directly to you through your web browser without the bother of e-mail.

Companies have been publishing RSS Newsfeeds for years now but the problem has been that Microsoft have been slow to embrace them ... But that's all changed.

So, How Do You Get to View RSS News?

First you'll need an RSS news reader. Microsoft have now programmed this into the latest version of Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer

With previous versions of IE, it’s pretty tough to know when a web page has a news feed available. With IE 7, the web page is scanned to see if the publisher has associated a news feed with that page. If a news feed is found, the news feed button on the toolbar lights up. In addition, the user can configure a sound to play when a feed is found, and the same of list of feeds associated with the page can be found under the Tools menu.

Step 1: Once you start using Internet Explorer 7 and navigate to a Government Auctions Page you'll see the RSS symbol light up in your browser.

Step 2: Click on the symbol and you'll see the feeds displayed - they consist of headlines, a few lines of the story and a link to see the whole story.

Step 3: Add the feed to your favourites and whenever Government Auctions publish news (several times a day) Internet Explorer can be set to alert you.

Firefox

If you want to try Firefox which we all love and is an alternative to Internet Explorer you can download it using the link.

It's a really clean user experience and is highly recommended.

The RSS News utility can be found in the bottom right corner of the Firefox browser. look for this symbol

Step 1: When clicked it allows you to subscribe to a newsfeed - just save it to a relevant folder.

Step 1: To view the feed just visit the folder where you bookmarked the feed. As you click on each headline the full story will be viewed and Firefox will alert you once a feed is updated.

Once you discover your RSS feature you a whole new world of news will open up to you that you didn't know existed! Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want. For example, if you would like the latest BBC News Entertainment stories, simply visit the Entertainment section and you will notice an orange RSS button on the left hand side.
